A North West police officer and a petrol attendant are facing charges of fraud amounting to R16 000 and defeating the ends of justice for allegedly misusing funds through state petrol cards.

Lethabong police station officer, Sergeant Moses Moeketsi, 39, and his alleged accomplice Susan Malunga, 46, were charged with 14 counts of fraud and defeating the ends of justice after allegedly misusing funds from police motor vehicle petrol cards between March and June 2021.

The suspects were arrested on Tuesday, said North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone.

“Between March and June 2021, Moeketsi connived with Malunga who works at Lethabong filling station and allegedly used three state motor vehicles petrol cards to fill fuel which exceeded the number of kilometres the said vehicles travelled after the initial transactions,” said Mokgwabone.

“After successfully claiming fictitious transactions, the two would allegedly split the cash to enrich themselves. As a result of these fraudulent activities committed by the suspects, the state suffered a loss of approximately R16 000 in those three months,’ said Mokgwabone.

According to Mokgwabone, investigations surrounding the matter led to the arrests on Tuesday.

“The suspects appeared briefly in court on Wednesday where Moeketsi was let out on R500 bail, while Malunga was released on a warning,” said Mokgwabone.

The accused were both expected to reappear before the same court on 5 April.
