Preparations for the peaceful protest demonstration by Cosatu on Friday are in full swing.

The union will be demonstrating against the recent fuel hike, high cost of living, unemployment, poverty and poor wages.

Mkhize said the SACP, ANC, Young Communist League, Sasco, Sanco Youth, Taxi Drivers Union (Qina Mshayeli/Satdu), Cosatu Gender Structure and Cosatu Young Workers have all been roped in to participate in the demonstration. He said they have requested the presence of Premier Sihle Zikalala to accept their memorandum.

In Pongola, the union and its affiliates will also hold the same event at the same time. They will gather on the R66 (Nongoma Road) and move via the N2 to KwaMlogo in Pongola.

Mkhize said the affiliates and alliance partners have responded to the call.

Provincial media liaison officer Gugu Sisilana said she still needed to confirm if the request by Cosatu for Zikalala’s presence to accept the memorandum had been received.

Sisilana had not confirmed this by the time of going to publication.
