With the recent fuel price hike on Wednesday, motorists in South Africa now have to fork out R27.74 per litre for petrol, but at least there are some daily items consumers can buy for less than that amount, but you won’t be able to put them in your tank.

The unwelcome fuel hike – which moved from R24.17 last month – puts consumers in a tight spot given the recent electricity price hike, interest rate increase, and a rising inflation rate.

As if that is not enough, food prices continue to sky rocket, taking the household food basket up to over R4,600, according to the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity group’s June 2022 Household Affordability index.

On the bright side, retailers still have a few staples for your basket that each cost less than a litre of petrol in South Africa right now.
