• Two petrol attendants were injured when a motorist knocked them over at a Johannesburg petrol station.
  • He fled after he couldn’t pay for the petrol put into the vehicle.
  • It was later found that the vehicle had been reported stolen from a Benoni golf club.

A motorist knocked over two petrol attendants in his haste to get away from a Johannesburg CBD petrol station on Monday, after he couldn’t foot the roughly R1 200 bill they had given him.

It later transpired that the white Mercedes-Benz he left behind before fleeing on foot had been reported stolen from a Benoni golf course, according to Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla.

“It’s alleged that the male driver of the vehicle came to the filling station on Monday morning at about 00:15, and filled the vehicle with fuel worth R1 242.05. When he attempted to … swipe the card [to pay for the petrol], it [was] declined,” Fihla said.

“An argument between the driver and petrol attendants ensued,” he said.

The man attempted to race off, but knocked over the two petrol attendants in the process, Fihla added.

He abandoned the car and fled the scene on foot instead.

“It was further discovered that the vehicle was allegedly stolen by a caddy at a golf course in Benoni who got a hold of the vehicle’s keys from the caddy bag and took the vehicle without the owner’s consent,” Fihla said.

At the time of publication, the SAPS had not commented.
