If you bought a Suzuki Swift (South Africa’s bests-selling passenger car) you would soon be paying R989,38 to fill your 37-litre tank in Gauteng from 12AM Wednesday morning.
The new R26,74 price per litre is 54% up from the R17,39, where it was a year ago. Back then, all it took was R643,43 for Suzuki Swift to fill their tanks.
There is a similar story with the Volkswagen Polo Vivo, the next best-selling passenger car, according to automotive business council, Naamsa, which saw the cost of filling its 45-litre tank rise from R782,55 to R1 203,30.
To fill the 40-litre tanks the Volkswagen Polo (hatch) and Volkswagen T-Cross, (the respective third and fifth best-selling passenger cars) it would now cost R1069,60, which is up R374 from where it was a year ago.
The fourth best selling passenger car, the Toyota Urban Cruiser’s 48-litre tank now costs R1 283,52 to fill, up from R834,72.
Though the Suzuki Swift is still the cheapest to fill of all its rivals, it should be noted that it has the smallest tank, at 37-litres. The Volkswagen Polo Vivo with its 45-litre tank and Toyota Urban Cruiser’s 48-litre tank has the largest.
The Suzuki Swift’s tank might be small but it’s also the most fuel efficient at 4,9 litres/100km. This means a full tank can take you 755km.
The best performance in term of fuel consumption and range is the Volkswagen Polo Vivo, with its 45-litre tank and 5,0 litres/100km. This works out to a range of 900km per tank.
The only thing separating Volkswagen Polo (hatch) and Volkswagen T-Cross is the latter’s marginally higher fuel consumption, of 5,5 litres/100km, versus the former’s 5,3 litres/100km. Volkswagen Polo (hatch) has a range of 754km and Volkswagen T-Cross has a range of 727km.
Unsurprisingly, Toyota Urban Cruiser’s fuel consumption of 6,2 litres/100 km does not give it much range, this is despite it having the largest tank at 48-litre tank. A full tank only gives it a range of 774km.
Looked at another way, it cost R400 more to fill the tank of the Toyota Urban Cruiser than it does to fill the Suzuki Swift but the Urban Cruiser will only take you about 20km further on a full tank.
